The watch: Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Grande Date

Recently, while driving around running errands, I decided to grab quick dinner at a place I’ve heard a few people in my office talk about. Tucked in a warm, inviting space, Lucky Duck Pub invites you to unwind with craft-beer comforts and pub fare done with flair. With wood-paneled walls, warm lighting and a palette of bold flavors surrounding you, the scene is perfect for pairing an exceptional mechanical timepiece. And that timepiece is the Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Grande Date. Together they make a perfect pairing of comfort food and watchmaking mastery.

Anytime I see cream cheese jalapeño poppers on a menu, I’m compelled to order them, and this time was no exception. They are golden fried to perfection, and deliver an exciting crispy, crunchy bite. The cream cheese filling tempers the heat of the pepper, creating a comfortable contrast of spice and smooth richness. Just as the crunch of the popper gives way to softness, so does the Chronomaster’s case reveal its layered construction, polished surfaces edging brushed finishes, the bezel flush and firm, yet inviting. The poppers’ bold bite is like the 5 Hz rapid rhythm of the El Primero movement, a burst of energy that demands attention yet remains refined.

I was craving wings and I’ glad I ordered them. The wings arrive on a parchment-lined tray, glazed in a sweet-smoky barbecue and honey mustard combo labeled “Quackin” with a playful nod to the pub’s name. The wings are fantastic and a must have when you go. And the “Quackin” sauce is one of my new favorites. This dish mirrors the Chronomaster’s layered dial: sub-registers appear like sauce pools on the wing platter, the bold red chrono hand like the vibrant golden glaze catching the light. The consistency of flavor: sweet, smoky, tangy, echoes the watch’s consistent accuracy and the seamless operation of its column-wheel chronograph.

The Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Grande Date is a powerhouse of watchmaking: powered by the famed El Primero movement with a 5 Hz beat rate, it delivers both precision and performance. Its openworked dial reveals the heart beneath: wheel-train bridges, column wheel, and escapement all subtly on display. The large date window lends practicality and elegance at once. The stainless-steel case, 45 mm in diameter, has confident proportions yet wears with sophistication. It is a timepiece that rewards close inspection and invites admiration with every glance.
