Fiesta Flavors and the 1/100th El Primero – Time & Taste Episode 4

The Time: 7:00 PM
The Watch: Zenith Defy 21 Chroma

This evening was an impromptu dinner with my fianceé and we chose to go to Mi Cozumel in Cincinnati. Known for its festive atmosphere it felt like the right place to go. For my trusty sidekick on this adventure, I could only choose 1 watch for the job, and that’s my beloved Zenith Defy 21 Chroma in white ceramic, but more on that later.

When we arrived at Mi Cozumel, there was already a line of people waiting. The restaurant was bursting at the seams and honestly I thought we would have to go somewhere else, but to my surprise, the line moved quickly and the employees inside were turning tables quickly, which was great.

Once we sat at the table, I ordered a Mexican Coke with a monstrous amount of ice in a beer mug. Whenever I eat Mexican food, I feel the need to have an icy and crispy Mexican Coke, and this was no exception.

First, we ordered a few of their al pastor tacos (partial photo below, because we were REALLY hungry 🤣).

The al pastor, which is marinated pork, offers a bold and complex flavor profile known for its savory sweet balance, with hints of spice, tang and a touch of smokiness achieved by the cooking process. The secret is the marinade that combines pineapple, chipotle chilies, guajillo chilies, achiote paste and vinegar, resulting in a vibrant, juicy and tender flavor that just hits all the senses! If you haven’t had the opportunity to try it, I urge you to.

Next, we ordered the Cozumel Flaming Fajitas which come on a wrought iron holder that gives the dish physical elevation and then they light them on fire 🔥 in front of you which is always a plus.

They’re a combination of succulent and juicy chicken, savory carne asada perfectly seasoned with a bit of char for that beefy smoky bite, and fresh plump shrimp cooked to perfection, accompanied by a medley of onions, peppers, mexican rice and tortillas to complete the ensemble.

Choosing a watch for this evening was no easy feat, but it wasn’t long before I landed on wearing my Zenith Defy 21 Chroma. Why? Because for starters, this restaurant is very colorful, from the decorations to the food and this watch is bursting with color. Produced in a series of 200 pieces worldwide and encased in an impressive 44mm white ceramic case, it serves as the perfect blank canvas for the main attraction, the openworked skeletonized dial sporting all the colors of the rainbow and reveals the legendary El Primero Chronograph movement inside beating at an astounding 36,000 vibrations per hour to achieve the ability to time events up to a mind boggling 1/100th of a second. Watching as the center seconds hand sweeps once per second around the dial is absolutely mesmerizing.

For dessert, we couldn’t pass up their flan. Popular in Latin American countries and something I grew up with, it is a must have for me whenever I see it in a menu. Comprised of a traditional baked custard, known for its smooth and creamy texture with rich and sweet flavor, topped with a sweet and viscous, almost sirupy layer of caramel. It’s the perfect end to this experience.
