High Notes and Chronographs: Luna Bar & Grill x Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Grande Date – Time & Taste Episode 9

The time: 4:00 PM
The watch: Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Grande Date

Some of you may or may not know that I’m one of the hosts for the ABR Roadshow created by America’s Best Restaurants and I get to travel the country coast to coast in search of independent restaurants that people should dine at on a weekly basis. And on this episode of Time & Taste, I’ll share one of those restaurants with you.

On a recent trip through Louisiana as part of the 2025 ABR Roadshow, we had the opportunity to stop at Luna Bar & Grill, a Lake Charles favorite where Creole heat meets soulful hospitality and live jazz hums like a heartbeat. It was a night thick with sound, spice, and story, one that begged for a timepiece as precise and performative as the dishes on the table. Enter the Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Grande Date.

This watch is an open-dial love letter to motion. The El Primero movement, beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, is legendary, and this version wears it proudly with a transparent display revealing its twin escapements. It’s not just about telling time. It’s about feeling every second like a drumline rolling beneath a melody. And Luna? Luna cooks with that same rhythm.

Let me tell you about my experience.

Stepping into the restaurant, I didn’t know what to expect, but that’s a good thing. I was immediately surrounded by rhythm, not just from the live music, but from the walls themselves. Lined with vintage concert posters, funky artwork, and nods to Louisiana’s rich cultural lineage, the space hums with personality. Industrial ceilings meet warm brick and bursts of mid-century modern lighting, while the bar, decked in stars and stocked like a jazz lounge, anchors the energy. It’s a room that feels like a soundtrack: layered, textured, and full of surprises. Just like the menu, the vibe is bold, and it invites you in and dares you to stay a while.

And the food you ask? Well, I had 3 menu items…

Neptuna Melt

I’ll be honest with you, I wasn’t sure about this one. I almost didn’t try it, but I’m so glad I did. Yellowfin tuna, provolone, pickles, and jalapeño mayo on griddled bread, it’s a sandwich that punches above its weight. The richness of the fish is mellowed by melted cheese, while the pickles and mayo spike it with acidity and heat. It’s the culinary equivalent of the Chronomaster’s big date window, unexpected, bold, and perfectly placed.

Redfish Apollo

Redfish, fried Gulf shrimp, sliced avocado, and a crab au gratin sauce that deserves its own solo. This plate is coastal decadence with altitude. The way each element layers, crispy, creamy, flaky, and briny, feels like the multi-register sweep of a chronograph hand: everything in motion, nothing out of place.

Dragon Tuna

This was my absolute favorite. The perfectly seared yellowfin steak arrives lacquered in a honey-spice glaze that clings and glows. It’s sweet and sultry, but with an edge, like a jazz trumpet slicing through a smoky room. Just as the Zenith’s visible escapement bridges precision and flair, this dish straddles fire and finesse without losing its tempo.

The Pairing

Luna doesn’t just serve dinner, it serves atmosphere. With every bite, every note from the stage, you’re reminded that rhythm and timing matter. The Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Grande Date lives in that same space: bold, complex, and completely alive. This pairing isn’t about subtlety. It’s about soul and synchronicity.

It’s also a watch that rewards those who pay attention. The open-heart dial, moonphase complication, and big date window don’t shout, they perform in harmony. Like Luna’s kitchen, the Chronomaster delivers detail with flair, confidence with control. It’s a timepiece that swings as hard as it syncs.
